Nieuwe nieuwsbrief NWO, juli 2021

Marcel Hoek en Tom van Rens van NWO hebben dinsdag 13 juli 2021 onderstaande nieuwsbrief uitgestuurd die we vanuit de NWBA graag met jullie willen delen:

Scientific Challenges in Energy System Integration. Help us out to identify these challenges!

The topsector Energy and NWO are organising an informal brainstorm to identify the scientific challenges associated with our future energy system. More details at the end of this email. The output of the session will be used in the development of new potential funding schemes at NWO and the topsector. If you are interested in participating in this discussion, please let us know viaenergie@nwo.nl. We aim to have a discussion with researchers from various expertises to explore the needs and challenges. The date is not set in stone yet, but we aim to have a live (or online) discussion in the week of 23 August.

NWO KIC Mission calls Overview Mission-driven KIC calls

  • Energy transition as socio-technical challenge -to gain insight into the possibilities and strategies for the stimulating of a sustainably constructed environment, a zero-emission energy system and sustainable system of mobility through interdisciplinary research into the social, societal and technical aspects of the energy transition. Pre-registrations are closed, but there is a second Matchmaking Event on September 16th. You are invited to explore potential collaborations with the applicants of pre-proposals, to collaborate for the full-proposal phase. Note, researchers and other parties not already part of a pre-proposal can join the matchmaking and potentially join the exciting consortia.
  • Human Capital: Learning communities as innovation accelerator. The aim of the call “Human Capital: learning communities as innovation accelerator” is to acquire new knowledge about the optimal development and deployment of learning communities so that the interaction of working and learning leads to innovation. This call is specifically focused on Energy Transition & Sustainability, Health & Care, and/or ICT Deadline: 14 September 2021. Budget: €2,628,000.

Other KIC calls

  • KIEM GoChem; call at NRPO SIA for 40k€ projects, specifically aimed at collaboration with SMEs on topics related to sustainable chemistry (MMIPs 6,7,8 from Mission Industry of the IKIA Climate & Energy). Open for universities of applied sciences and other knowledge institutions (universities, institutes) – multiple deadlines, next deadline 5 October 2021.

Other calls

The new perspectief round 2021/2022 is expected to open in mid-July.

  • NWO and the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) aim to strengthen research cooperation between São Paulo and the Netherlands by funding joint research projects. Consortia of research institutes and other organisations (both public and private) in the Netherlands and in Brazil can apply for funding of joint research projects that focus on sustainable biomass production for a biobased economy. Call, Deadline September 21st, budget 1,4M€.

Dutch Research Agenda (NWA)

  • NWA-ORC Routes 2020/21 budget 132.3 M€ – all routes); initiatives for the route energy transition are published here (and also the initiatives of other routes, e.g. circular economy; materials; smart, liveable cities; the blue route; logistics & transport).
  • Coming soon: ‘Transition to an emission free and circular building industry’, call will open here.

Aim for Impact: online workshop

Creating impact is becoming more and more important in research. NWO has developed an online workshop to help you shape your Impact Plan: Impact Plan workshop. More workshops on creating impact are being developed.

Scientific Challenges in Energy System Integration. Help us out to identify these challenges!

The topsector Energy and NWO are organising an informal brainstorm to identify the scientific challenges associated with our future energy system:

The current energy system is largely regulated through market mechanisms, whereby separate mechanisms have been set up for different energy carriers and for different time scales. In the future energy system, energy production is largely decentralized, end users have a greater role and influence in the energy markets and there is a much greater dependence between different energy carriers. This while the production of energy is becoming much more unpredictable and less plannable and energy consumption more erratic. The importance of demand-side flexibility is increasing, not only for balancing, but also to avoid congestion in distribution networks. The question is whether the current market mechanisms are still adequate in this new situation.

The knowledge questions related to this theme focus on analyzing bottlenecks in the current market mechanisms in the future energy system and finding and testing new market designs that can prevent these bottlenecks.

If you are interested in participating in this discussion, please let us know via energie@nwo.nl. We aim to have a discussion with researchers from various expertises to explore the needs and challenges. The date is not set in stone yet, but we aim to have a live (or online) discussion in the week of 23 August.

NWO and the Topsector Energy will use this valuable input to develop the appropriate funding instrument(s).

ESI-far projects awarded

5 projects awarded within the ESI-far 2019 call. The call has been designed by the NWO Domains Science and Social Sciences and Humanities together with the Topsector Energy’s Systems Integration Programme, the Taskforce for Applied Research (SIA), and the Netherlands eScience Center. These parties together funded the call through a cash or in kind contribution.

We wish all PI’s and their consortia all the best in their ambitious endeavours.
